Description:

  • Osteotide is a sterile solution for injection containing Teriparatide (recombinant human parathyroid hormone 1-34).

  • It is produced by using a strain of E. coli employing recombinant DNA technology.

  • Its sequence is identical to that of 34-N terminal amino acids (the biologically active region) of the endogenous 84-amino acid human parathyroid hormone.

  • It is a water soluble protein with a molecular weight of 4117.8 Daltons.

Parathyroid hormone:

  • Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is hormone secreted by the Parathyroid gland.

  • PTH is secreted in response to low blood serum calcium levels.

  • It regulates serum calcium level through its effect on bones, kidneys and intestines.

  • PTH influences bone the remodeling, in which the bone tissue is resorbed and rebuilt alternatively.

  • There are two types of cells in bones

    • Osteoclast: are the cells that break down bone tissue.

    • Osteoblast: are the cells that form new bone tissue.

  •  The PTH indirectly stimulates the osteoclast activity within the bone matrix (osteon) in an effort to release more ionic calcium (Ca2+) into the blood to elevate a low serum calcium level.

  • The bones act as a "storage house" from which the body can make  the"withdrawals" as needed to keep the amount of calcium in the blood (serum calcium) at appropriate levels.

  •  PTH is secreted primarily by the chief cells of the parathyroid glands.
